BASEBALL NEEDS TO RECOVER AFTER STEROIDS CONTROVERSY
by admin ~ April 8th, 2009.
The union chief Don Fehr and his right hand man Gene Orza must leave the union graciously. The steroid controversy, which was set off when the results of Alex Rodriguez’s use of performance enhancing drugs leaked to the press, had put many of the baseball players’ careers in jeopardy. When Fehr was barraged with questions about the issue and what he intends to do about it, he just dismissed the questions by refusing to answer. There was neither sense of remorse nor any sign of being humbled by the incident. Instead, he remained condescending as ever.
Baseball needs to pull through this situation. For that to happen, Fehr and Orza should let go of the players union. Let someone who had more concern for the game and the players take over. Someone like Hank Aaron, one of the well respected baseball icons.
From The Daily News:
Even if he were only a figurehead who would surround himself with lawyers and accountants, baseball needs people like Aaron to let fans trust the game again.
He would be a logical replacement as commissioner as well, except Aaron would have the most to gain by striking Barry Bonds from the record books and re-establishing himself as baseball’s home run king. Better to let someone else make that call.
So let us do the next best thing and put Aaron in charge of rebuilding the tattered image of the union.
Just like Fehr, Orza is not the least bit remorseful for his involvement in the steroid scandal. Involvement is an understatement. He was the reason why this all began in the first place. The results of the drug tests on the MLB players should have been destroyed to keep the anonymity of the players. However, because Orza refused to let them go just in case there were false positives they had become available for the FBI to subpoena as evidence.
Marvin Miller, the former executive director of the MLB, Fehr and Orza need to understand that the players’ welfare comes first and not just the hefty salaries that they are earning. They are not doing that at all and should just let go of the leadership. Baseball needs to go back to its glory days and Hank Aaron is just the man for the job.
