HALL OF FAME IS ALL ABOUT STATISTICS

The issue on steroids will be opening the baseball season this year. The MLB officials dealt with quite a number of serious blows off-season when several of the players were implicated in using performance-enhancing drugs. The mandatory drug testing following the George Mitchell report turned out to be the biggest news of the quarter when confidential results were leaked to the press.
How can America’s well-loved sport have such a bad reputation just because some people are irresponsible and chose to get on ahead by cheating? This controversy is like one of those long lasting steroids that stay in the blood stream for a while with potent side effects. Definitely this infamous incident will go down in history.
From Valencia County News Bulletin:
More recently, Barry Bonds and several others tried to claim that they never “knowingly” took steroids. Yeah, right.
Roger Clemens angrily denied steroid allegations, but his former trainer apparently has DNA evidence that show he is laying.
Even the other guys who have admitted steroid use didn’t exactly take full responsibility.
Jason Giambi apologized for “something,” but he wouldn’t say what it was because he was fearful that the Yankees would void his contract.
Andy Pettite said he only did it “once or twice,” which is very difficult to believe. Still, that was enough to get him a pass from much of the media.
Alex Rodriguez seemed to come clean at first, but his explanation has a ton of holes in it that make it hard to believe that he is being completely honest.
And Jose Canseco did cop to his own steroid use, but only because he was trying to sell a book ratting out other players, so his motives are far from pristine.
The respected Hall of Fame is no longer as hallowed as it used to be. Now that more players are suspected to be using steroids one would wonder if there is still any prestige of being elected in it. Sportswriters can do their part in trying to clean it up by being uncompromising when they vote for players to be included in it. Bonds and Clemens don’t deserve to be there and they should think twice before voting in McGwire.
