KENT ON STEROIDS AND BASEBALL

<br /> kent-steroidsLately, all you hear about Major League Baseball is the news that this athlete used that steroid or that this player has been named for taking this drug. Jeff Kent of the San Francisco Giants showed his love for baseball in a very effective way— speaking against anabolic steroids during the height of the steroids scandal. He has been quoted by Bud Selig and Sen. George Mitchell during their campaign for drug testing. While Kent commends the recent policies taken in by the Major League and the players’ union, he thinks that better testing is still needed. Kent suggested to even taking athletes’ blood samples in addition to the routine simple urine. Kent stood against the use of performance enhancing drugs throughout his career, and in his retirement speech last week, he still held his ground as an advocate of MLB steroid testing.

From San Francisco Chronicle:

“Major League Baseball and the union created a drug policy that’s on the right path. Baseball has brought the game to a better level playing field than it ever was,” Kent said. “Whether I personally had anything to do with that . . . I wanted to put this game in a better place, and I hope younger players just don’t give up and say, ‘We’re in a good spot’ and not make more progress.

“The integrity of the game always needs to be in question.”

Kent added the game’s integrity “was jeopardized for so many years, and I’m completely embarrassed about the steroid era.”

He hit more home runs than any other second baseman in history, and they all came in a tainted era.

Kent walks away from baseball as a champion in all aspects. He has never cheated with steroid and other performance enhancers. He played cleanly and treated baseball with utmost respect. This type of athleticism is the stuff that Hall of Fame legends are made of.
