Korean research team proves that steroids improve condition in post-viral olfactory loss

A research team from the Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in Seongnam, led by Dr. Jeong-Whun Kim concluded that intervention with glucocorticoids and mometasone nasal spray can significantly improve olfactory function in patients with post-viral olfactory loss.
Out of 71 patients examined in a research, 28 patients were administered oral prednisolone for 2 weeks while 43 patients were administered with prednisolone plus Gingko Biloba for 4 weeks.
Gingko Biloba was considered to increase the odor response of patients with olfactory loss. It was given at 80 mg three times a day while the steroid prednisolone was gradually lessened from 30 mg/d to 10 mg/d.
Mometasone furoate nasal spray was applied to all patients, two puffs for each nostril twice a day for 4 weeks.
The rates of treatment response are more or less higher in the group that received combined therapy, which is at 37%, while those who received a single drug therapy had a treatment response rate of 32%.
A month after the first diagnostic examinations, both odor threshold and odor identification scores significantly improved in both groups. Nevertheless, those who obtained prednisolone with Gingko Biloba were linked with somewhat better scores in the odor identification test.
