Major sports figures have been making headlines for the past weeks, from Alex Rodriguez of the New York Yankees, Jessica Hardy of the U.S swimming team, and now Kim Willoughby of the U. S volleyball team.
Kim Willoughby was allegedly tested positive on anabolic steroid after her Italian club Perugia played Cesena on April 5. She immediately returned home after their team lost the playoffs, although she said that it was due to a family problem.
Kim Willoughby was part of the American volleyball team that won silver during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
From SI.com:
ROME (AP) — The Italian Olympic Committee says American volleyball player Kim Willoughby has tested positive for a steroid.
CONI said Thursday that Willoughby tested positive for nandrolone after her Italian club Perugia played Cesena on April 5.
Willoughby played on the American team that won the silver medal at last year’s Beijing Olympics.
The Perugia club’s Web site says Willoughby returned to the U.S. immediately after the team was eliminated from the league playoffs in April, citing a family emergency.
Athletes are getting hooked on anabolic steroids because of the numerous benefits they get. These anabolic steroids claim to produce great muscle build-up, add strength and enhance performance. In the case of Willoughby, the nandrolone steroid found in her system enhances the protein synthesis of the body which stimulates the formation of new muscle tissues. It is a known anti-estrogen which prevents the actions of the female hormone. This is beneficial to athletes since fats and unnecessary fluid will not be stored in the muscle tissues.
Nandrolone, on the other hand, is naturally found in the urine at an amount of 2mg which is set by the Olympics. This means that if an athlete is tested more than this amount, he will be banned from the games.
