PARENTS NOW PART OF THE PROGRAM AGAINST STEROID USE

by admin ~ February 3rd, 2009.

<br /> roid_busters-steroidsThe Powered by Me! program of St. Joseph Medical Center has already started the second leg of its attempt to stop the local youth, especially high school athletes, from using anabolic steroids, other performance enhancing drugs and dietary supplements. Aside from the side effects of these drugs, the use of performance enhancers is also a way of cheating in sports. The first phase of the program was initiated last year and it reached out to the involvement of doctors to the cause. Local physicians were given a list of signs and symptoms of steroid use to help them identify and inform patients who use the drugs during check-ups. The second phase of the program called, “Parents Awareness of Steroids and Supplements” asks for the help of parents to spread the dangers of steroids.

From The Examiner:

In the latest phase, Parents Awareness of Steroids and Supplements, Powered by Me! will be distributing 15,000 refrigerator magnets to 24 Baltimore County public high schools. The magnets are printed with information to help parents start a discussion about steroids and energy drinks.

The Baltimore County PTA will help in handing out the magnets.

There also will be a Web site featuring information for families, a message from Baltimore Oriole second baseman Brian Roberts, and a pledge for children and coaches to sign vowing to play fair and sober. A public service announcement will be sent to media and school systems.

According to the program’s officials, parents have a crucial role in the fight against steroids and that they should be educated about these drugs. In doing so, parents would be able to reach out to their children and hopefully influence them to play sports fair and square.
