STEROID CAMPAIGN LAUNCHED TO HELP STUDENTSIn memory of their son, Frank and Brenda Marrero launch a steroid awareness program to inform high school students, especially athletes of the dangers of using these substances. Four years ago, ther son, Efrain Marrero admitted his steroid use to his parents. They went and saw a doctor who told them that the drugs would not stay long in his system and would be eliminated eventually. However, because steroids can cause severe side effects like psychiatric conditions, Efrain had become depressed that caused him to take his life.

The Efrain Anthony Marrero campaign had gone around the country promoting health and drug prevention with Frank Marrero as the main spokesperson. They have spoken with students, coaches and even representatives in Congress. They have approached the Vacaville and Will C. Wood high schools for a year long program in educating athletes. The Marreros are doing this in partnership with the Oakland Raiders and the National Football League.

From The Reporter:

“From a personal level, this kind of information wasn’t there when we went through it with our son. But this program teaches students the proper ways to work out and handle nutrition,” said Frank Marrero.

“If our son had these options he would be here with us today,” he added.

The Raiders organization has pledged $30,000 for each of the schools to implement the program for the 2009-10 school year. Targeted for male and female athletes, the program is peer-led and promotes healthy sports nutrition and strength-training as alternatives to use of alcohol, illicit and performance-enhancing drugs.

Frank Marrero estimates that he has addressed more than 20,000 students and coaches over the last four years and bringing a program such as this to local schools is the culmination of the hard work put in by the foundation members.

“We have been so focused on education, and now we’re able to broaden that mission and explain to students how to do this the right way,” said Frank Marrero.

While the board of trustees of the said schools are yet to give their approval for the implementation, Superintendent Aycock said they are supporting the program for the students.
