STEROIDS ABUSE RAMPANT IN TULSA
by admin ~ April 22nd, 2009.
The arrest of 10 individuals linked to steroids made everyone realize how they had taken the matter too lightly. The authorities have been lenient with the existence of these substances in the community. Different government agencies worked together to arrest the widespread doping problem in Tulsa. For almost 2 years the Tulsa Police, the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics, and the Drug Enforcement Agency had been investigating the movement of the banned substances.
What was more alarming to the investigators was that those involved were not small time steroid users and dealers. Rather they were professionals who belonged to the upper and middle class in the society.
From News on 6:
Officers were directed to a job site, where they found Derrick Davis.
“Here’s what’s going to happen. You’ll be booked into Tulsa County and there is a bond, so you can bond out,” the arresting officer told Davis.
Documents show Davis ordered raw anabolic steroid compounds from China in order to make injectable steroids. They say when Davis realized his latest shipment had been seized by U.S. Customs; he had a friend hide all his steroid stuff at work, which police also recovered.
Nationally recognized competitive bodybuilder from Tulsa, Trudy Ireland-Kline was out of state and promised to surrender when she returns.
Documents show she admitted using steroids, but said she quit because they were causing heart problems.
According to one of the steroid users that were nabbed, steroid abuse was caused by the use of the substances “beyond what was considered therapeutic”. Tom Burke confessed to using steroids for 20 years as supplements to bodybuilding.
Anabolic-androgenic substances are popular for those who want to improve their muscle mass and for those who seek added strength gains. This is the reason why there are many athletes implicated in steroids use because they are considered performance enhancing drugs.
Dr. Gary Lee is also charged for issuing prescriptions of steroids which were not meant for medical use. Brad Stahlheber was nabbed for buying them off the internet, while bodybuilder Darrell Terrell was charged for possession of syringes and steroid vials.
