Teen’s Steroid Commercial Won An Award

Babbitt Travis was very excited when he learned that his 30-second public service announcement won the first place in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Sports PSA category sponsored by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation. After learning that he won, Babbitt started sending text messages to his parents and friends.
The said audio and video production that he showed in his class at the Lenawee Intermediate School District Tech Center was part of the assignment given by Melissa Conklin, Babbitt’s audio and visual production teacher. She added that she made it mandatory that every student must participate in the competition since it will give them opportunity to interact with professional broadcasters.

Babbitt, 17, made a 30-second video last fall that contains footage of some of his classmates lifting weights. He also included facts on how steroids can affect people who use them.
The assignment led to him taking home an award certificate on March 11 at a banquet in Grand Rapids. There he received first-place recognition in the television Michigan High School Athletic Association Sports PSA category by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters Foundation.
With everything going on in Major League Baseball with steroids, I thought it would be fitting to do that (topic),” he said.
Travis Babbitt told the media that he is involved in sports. He‘s part of Blissfield National High School baseball and football teams. He also stated that his inspiration on the project was his involvement in sports and the on going scandal in the Major League Baseball.
His 30-seconder commercial contains footage of some his classmates lifting weights. He added in some facts about steroid and how it affects the lives of the people using it.
The contents of the winning entry will be used to produce a sports casting PSA to air statewide.
