YANKEES FACE ANOTHER STEROID SCANDAL
by admin ~ February 25th, 2009.
The news of steroid use isn’t just limited to Major League Baseball athletes themselves. Just after facing the news on Alex Rodriguez’s steroid use, another shocking scandal has laid itself over the New York Yankees. Just a few days ago, a report came out that Felipe Lopez III, the son of the Yankees vice president, was arrested back in 2002 for the possession of illegal drugs. Lopez was found with prescription anabolic steroids and performance enhancing drugs including a date-rape drug athletes use for muscle recovery. He served 19 months probation after he pleaded guilty to the charges.
From AFP:
Lopez III was arrested at his Tampa home in 2002 as part of a US Drug Enforcement Administration operation for trafficking in GBL - a chemical related to the date rape drug GHB, the Post reported.
Also in that raid, police found vials of anabolic steroids, a shotgun and papers referring to chemicals used to make the drug Ecstasy, according to the newspaper.
Lopez used to work as a strength trainer for the Yankees in their Tampa training facility although Yankees officials have denied this. He was asked to lay low and stay away from the team’s activities soon after his drug involvement was revealed by the New York Post. This wasn’t Lopez’s first brush with the law. Apparently, he was also arrested in 2005 for punching his former girlfriend. This case was soon dropped for unknown reasons. Felipe Lopez III isn’t just anyone in the world of baseball. His father happens to be married to Jessica Steinbrenner, the daughter of Yankees principle owner George Steinbrenner.
